Unpainted Timber

(Icelandic: Ómálað timbur)

How to sort
Timber is divided into two groops:
Non-white/plastic-coated timber and White-painted and plastic-coated timber.

Where to bring it
Smaller loads: The nearest recycling centre (max 2 m3).
Bigger loads: The Receiving Plant at Gufunes.

The Recycling

All timber  that is non-white/plastic-coated is shredded at the Receiving Plant at Gufunes before it's sent to the ferro-silicon (iron alloy) plant at Grundartangi, where it makes an excellent source of carbon for the production process. This successful method of carbon production for a ferro-silicon smelter is unique in the world.

Over the last years a considerable increase has been in timber collection at SORPA due to increase in constructions in the capital area. Unfortunatley the ferro-silicon plant at Grundartangi is unable to use all that amount of timber SORPA receives so SORPA is now trying to find other ways to recycle the excess material that can not be used at Grundartangi or the composting.
